In which I'm leaving Substack
I want to thank everyone here for signing up for my newsletter when I started it a few months ago. I’ve been writing it in fits and starts, and Substack made the news in a bad way right after I restarted it again.
If you haven’t heard the situation with Substack, which is completely understandable, I’m going to quote Sarah Gailey’s explanation here, as they sum it up much better than I could:
If you’re curious about the motivation behind leaving Substack, here’s a good place to start, and here’s a good place to learn more. The short and diplomatic version is that Substack is doing some questionable financial business, and simultaneously isn’t protecting trans people the way it ought to. There’s quite a lot I’d like to say about the situation, but for now I’ll leave it at this: the choice between protecting profit and protecting people feels like a difficult one, but in reality, it is a false choice. It’s easy to make that decision feel complicated, but it’s not. If there can be no profit without investment in exposing trans people to harm, then there should be no profit.
Gailey has already moved their great online community here, and I also can’t stay on this platform in good conscience knowing Substack follows these practices. In some ways, I’m lucky that I’ve just started; I have the chance to take what I’ve done here and bring it somewhere else. I’m not sure what that will be yet, but I’ll let you know when I do, if that’s okay. Thanks again for subscribing and supporting me—I really appreciate it.
Here’s one last Pennydog and baby photo for posterity:
